The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is exploring a partnership with the Grand Rapids-based Van Andel Research Institute to meld Van Andel's focus on bench research with the cancer research, clinical trials and treatments used at Karmanos.
Detroit-based Karmanos and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ann Arbor are the two largest cancer institutes in the state. Karmanos treats 6,500 newly diagnosed patients each year. It's running 446 clinical trials and 270 cancer-specific scientific studies.
