1. Forthcoming drastic expansion of capacity
China has more than 200 methanol producers today. The total capacity reached 4.226 million t/a in 2003 and the output was 2.9887 million t/a, an increase of 41.68% over the previous year. Despite a great number of methanol producers in China, most of them only have a capacity of around 10 000 t/a. These units are mostly located in synthetic ammonia plants. The synthesis process used is mainly the medium and high-pressure process. The units have small scale, outdated technology, great energy consumption, poor product quality and high production cost.
