JERUSALEM _ In one of the more unusual scenes of the Palestinian presidential campaign, leading candidate Mahmoud Abbas was recently lifted on the shoulders of Zakaria Zubeidi, one of the most wanted gunmen in the West Bank.
Abbas, expected to be elected Sunday as the new president of the Palestinian Authority, has called for an end to the use of weapons in the Palestinian uprising. But he also is trying to connect with a range of constituencies and secure their support in an effort to gain something of the popular legitimacy enjoyed by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
