WASHINGTON -- Amoco Corp. recently expanded its use of a gasoline processing method that, so far, no one else seems to be emphasizing and possibly no one else is adopting at all. The company takes an extra distillation step to remove heavy aromatics from reformat before adding that blending stock to its premium gasoline.
The result is not a reformulated gasoline, but it is a move in that direction.
Although the Clean Air Act does not limit overall aromatics in reformulated gasoline, it does have requirements that encourage aromatics reduction. The law will force cuts in emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and research has indicated that ...
