Ensuring that visiting researchers meet the proper safety and regulatory protocols can be tough for any lab manager, but it's just part of the job for Ann Emrick.
As research operations manager for the Life Sciences Directorate at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York, Emrick bridges the gap between researchers and regulation to ensure both are satisfied and up to speed before projects begin.
"They cannot start work until a safety review has been done and approved," Emrick says, adding that in most cases research projects have secured funding prior to the safety review. "Science is our mission. However, it must be done safely."
