During the various 2003 Tucson gem and mineral shows, Chinese mimetite specimens became one of the hottest topics of conversation because of their spectacular color and luster, various crystal habits, uncertain identification, and confusing locality information. Although some of these specimens were also labeled as being pyromorphite and vanadinite, they were later proven to be mimetite by several analyses from China, the United States, and Germany. As with most new finds in China, the mimetite locality was first labeled as either Hunan, Guangxi, or Guangdong.
