Father Figure By Ann Widdecombe (Weidenfeld, [pounds sterling]14.99)
WRITE what you know, goes the adage. But Ann Widdecombe has chosen in her novels to explore alien terrain: the treacherous wilderness of modern family life of which she, unmarried and childless, has no intimate knowledge.
Mind you, as the sneer begins to form on one's chops, one should recall that in devising her intrepid narratives of marriage and parenthood, Widdy has a formidable role model - Jane Austen, who found close observation a very adequate substitute for personal experience.
