The most famous three letters in fashion have a new designer--the third since the label's namesake retired from ready-to-wear in 1998--and his name is Stefano Pilati. As creative director for Yves Saint Laurent, the Italy-born Pilati--who inherited the reins from his former boss, Texan Tom Ford, in March 2004, who had, in turn, wrangled them from Morocco-born Alber Elbaz back in 2000--has a bumpy road ahead. Taking over chez Saint Laurent proved a difficult task for Pilati's two predecessors, but the dramas in both cases had little to do with the clothing being designed.
