The case of Richard Reid, dubbed the 'shoe bomber', who was overpowered by fellow passengers and crew on board a flight between Paris and the US on December 22, 2001, highlighted a new development in the air war on terror. Whilst crossing the Atlantic on the American Airlines' flight bound for Miami, Reid tried to set light to a fuse connected to explosives hidden in the base of the trainer shoes he was wearing. Only the prompt action of crewmembers and passengers prevented the airliner from being destroyed.
