Jan. 12--PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- State Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis yesterday introduced a bill that would give each active member of the Rhode Island National Guard $250,000 in state-funded life insurance.
Guard members can purchase the same level of coverage now themselves, at a cost of $16.25 per month. If they decline, they would only be eligible for a one-time death benefit intended to cover short-term expenses including a funeral.
Under the bill filed by Raptakis, D-Coventry, the state would cover that cost for roughly 860 active-duty members -- which he estimated at $200,000.
