Abstract

Urban agriculture has evolved into a complex set of concepts and goals stemming from the UN metanarrative on sustainable development and the ecological city. Urban agriculture is a concern for practitioners who aim to make cities of the South more food secure, socially healthy and environmentally sound. These ideas have percolated to cities of the North as well. Recently, Montreal community groups took it up. Initially, they aimed to satisfy the local demand for more gardening opportunities in the city.
