BRUSSELS (FNS) - Du Pont Co. has agreed to sell about 5 percent of Imperial Chemical Industries PLC's production capacity of staple nylon in order to gain approval from the European Community Commission for the purchase of ICI's carpet nylon interests.
The ECC had been concerned that a total purchase would give Du Pont a dominant position in the European market for nylon carpet fibers. The ECC said the sales would cut Du Pont's market share from a possible 43 percent to 38 percent.
Under the agreement reached with the ECC, Du Pont said it will reserve 12 metric-kilo-tons of ICI carpet fiber for a competitor.
