Even though it appeared Curt Schilling would not be ready to start the season for the Red Sox after undergoing major surgery on his right ankle after the World Series, manager Terry Francona said yesterday that it is too early to discard the possibility that his ace will oppose Randy Johnson on opening night at Yankee Stadium April 3.

"I don't know his timetable, but knowing Schill, I wouldn't rule him out," Francona said at last night's 66th annual Boston Baseball Writers dinner.

The manager said he spoke with Schilling approximately 10 days ago and was encouraged by the conversation.
