A dispute over lumber sales in St. Charles has spilled over into the courts and could have a wider impact on other suburbs.
Last week, Seigle's Inc., the Elgin-based chain of 11 lumber and home-improvement stores, sued the city of St. Charles to block collection of a 2% "lumber tax'' that took effect Jan. 1.
St. Charles is seeking to tax any lumber products made within its borders or sold out of inventory there. The tax is designed to be an end-run around tax deals that Seigle's and rival Hines Lumber Co. have struck with other towns-deals that St. Charles says have drained more than $1 million from its coffers.
