The venerable traveling-wave tube (TWT) is the subject of this month's product survey. The principles of operation and the remarkable reliability of this class of device were the topics of a recent JED article ("Almost 20 Years and Still Going Strong," March 1992, p. 35).
The versatile, wideband TWT is found in a wide variety of EW, radar and communications applications. The TWT design is generally related to one of three functions. The tube may be used as a low-noise amplifier or an intermediate-power or high-power amplifier.
Low-noise tubes commonly display noise figures of 3 dB or less at S-band and less than 6 dB over the 1- to 18-GHz range. ...
