Two Wisconsin scientists will play major roles in a $12 million river protection grant announced Friday by Caterpillar Inc.

The grant through the Caterpillar Foundation to the Nature Conservancy is for an ambitious project to guide protection of the world's freshwater and transform how large river systems are protected.

At $12 million, it's also the largest corporate gift ever made to the Nature Conservancy.

Two scientists with Wisconsin connections will direct the Great Rivers Center, which will function as an electronic clearinghouse to provide access to large river information worldwide.
