Article: Weight and bulk density of loblolly pine plywood logs in southeast Arkansas.

Abstract

A total of 314 butt logs and 228 upper logs were cut from loblolly pine trees that were harvested from four different sites in southeastern Arkansas during each of the four seasons of 2002. Most logs were cut to lengths of 17, 26.5, or 35 feet for a plywood mill, but logs with large-end diameters of 30 inches or more were cut into sawlogs of 16.5 feet. The study developed regression equations for predicting the weight of butt logs and upper logs using small-end diameter squared times the length which had [r.sup.2] values of 0.92 and 0.91, respectively.
