If Sunday night's Golden Globes telecast were a day at the races, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would have bet all the favorites.
In fact, there wasn't a single surprise pick among the movie awards handed out at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills.
The winners, which included the wine-country, road-trip, buddy film "Sideways" and the Howard Hughes biopic "The Aviator" in the dual best-motion-picture categories (musical or comedy and drama, respectively) were safe choices, meant to offend no one and, more important, to protect the HFPA's reputation as a prognosticator of the more prestigious Oscars.
