CPI inflation - the Government's target measure - increased to 1.6 per cent in December, from 1.5 per cent in November, driven by a combination of furniture, recreation, seasonal food and energy costs.
In December, the usual seasonal price increases for furniture and furnishings were much steeper than in recent years with widespread price rises for a range of items.
