Jan. 18--CHANDIGARH, India -- The recent intermittent rains in Punjab have brightened prospects of higher wheat production during 2005 with production now estimated to touch 149 lakh tonnes around 4 lakh tonnes more than last year.
Higher production is also attributed to timely sowing. While the area brought under the wheat crop last year was 34.44 lakh hectares this year it is expected to touch 34 lakh hectares. Till December last the area under wheat was 33.50 lakh tonnes points out director agriculture, Dr B S Sidhu.
