For a long time, the Windows applications story was pretty simple. There were plenty of companies to look at if you wanted to tire kick, but when you were ready to buy a first-class application, you almost always ended up going back to the one that sold you Windows in the first place: Microsoft.
Microsoft Excel was the only name in the Windows spreadsheet game, Microsoft Word dominated word processing, and Microsoft Power-Point was a big player in the graphics market.
To top it all off, many people regarded application categories in which Microsoft didn't yet have an entry (database management or asynchronous communications, for instance) as "immature." ...
