IN "NOTES D'UN PEINTRE" (1908), his first published essay and a milestone in art theory, Matisse emphasized the chromatic approach that defined him as the art world's first pure colorist, the first painter to make the relationship among colors the driving force in a painting. He described the intersection of color and expression that is the essence of Fauvism's importance to the later development of expressionism:
