For yachtsmen, the area around Harbor Springs, Michigan, must offer a cruel irony. The town of Harbor Springs, nearby Charlevoix and the upper peninsula offer some of the most spectacular cruising grounds and scenery I've come across. But the catch is that there is only a short season--about four months--to enjoy this area of Lake Michigan. As early as September the frost begins to cling to windshields, the leaves are falling and boats are scrambling for the shed.
