As I reflect on my first year in Eugene, it forces me to go back to my start in policing.
Twenty-six years ago, I became a police officer because I wanted to help people, just like thousands of others who become police officers. Also like many, five years into my career I almost quit, frustrated that I had not changed the world and nearly convinced that the world couldn't be saved. Very slowly, I found the key to a successful and rewarding career in police work: Just make it better, one person at a time.
