If Onondaga County prosecutors had been tougher on Karo Brown over the years, he might not be facing up to life in prison in federal court, his lawyer claims.

Defense lawyer Simon Moody makes the unusual claim in court papers filed in advance of Brown's sentencing, which was scheduled for this afternoon but was postponed late Tuesday until Jan. 26. A federal jury convicted him last summer of a racketeering conspiracy for using violence, including murder, over eight years to control the territory of the Boot Camp street gang and its drug trade from 1995 through 2003.
