A food fight is brewing as giant Smith's Food and Drug Centers Inc. gets ready to enter San Diego County's fiercely competitive grocery market.

Smith's is closing deals on four sites for its combination food and drug centers, company officials confirmed. Smith's stores are typically 80,000 square feet, twice the size of San Diego's dominant local supermarkets -- Vons, Ralph's and Lucky.

The Salt Lake City-based company is nailing down locations in El Cajon, Santee, Vista and La Jolla, said spokeswoman Shelly Thomas. Smith's executives are also in negotiations for at least six other sites.
