WASHINGTON -- New initiatives for ethanol (grain alcohol) announced by President Bush last week have scrambled planning by oil and chemical companies for the introduction of reformulated gasolines in 1995.
The need to make further reductions in the volatility of reformulated gasoline blendstocks to offset adding highly volatile ethanol into up to 30% of these fuels is only the beginning.
The new moves broaden the slate of potential oxygenates for use in these gasolines to include not only ethanol but also ETBE (ethyl tertiary butyl ether), the oxygenate made from ethanol. This, in turn, introduces new uncertainties into plans to expand production of ...
