Jan. 21--In a town divided by a river, Bend's west side seems to have it all.
A lack of big-box retail stores, billboards and traffic lights set it apart from commercial districts on 3rd Street and Highway 20. It boasts cozy neighborhood streets and enough of a mountain climate to support a canopy of mature ponderosa trees.
What the west side doesn't have is room to grow, city planners say.
Despite a strong demand for westside housing, most of the city's long-term future development will occur on the north and east sides of the city, say city officials.
