Southern California air regulators are suing BP West Coast Products and are seeking $183.1 million in civil penalties for alleged violation of air pollution rules by its Carson refinery.

The lawsuit, filed in the Central District of Los Angeles County Superior Court on Jan. 20, alleges that BP illegally released air pollutants by failing to adequately inspect, maintain, repair and properly operate the refinery as required under air quality regulations. While some violations were due to negligence, others were knowingly and willfully committed by refinery officials, the lawsuit alleges.
