On a brilliant, breezy morning last December, the husband-and-wife contemporary-art collectors Melva Bucksbaum and Raymond J. Learsy sat on the shaded breakfast terrace of the National Hotel in Miami Beach, describing their most recent purchase: a set of three benches in primary colors by the noted Viennese artist Franz West. Part of a contingent from New York's Whitney Museum (of which they're both trustees) that also included board chairman Leonard Lander, Beth Rudin DeWoody and the museum's new director, Adam D. Weinberg, they'd traveled to south Florida not just for fun in the sun but for the hottest art event of the season: the second annual Art Basel Miami Beach.
