THE FREQUENT CO-OCCURRENCE of substance use and misuse with severe mental disorders requires that alcohol and drug use behavior be assessed in psychiatric treatment settings. Epidemiological data indicate that one third to one half of persons with a mental disorder qualify for a diagnosis of alcohol or other drug-related disorders or dependence at some time in their lives (Kessler et al., 1996: Regier et al., 1990). Comorbidity rates are highest for persons living with bipolar disorder (61%) or schizophrenia (47%) (Regier et al., 1990).
