The 2004 hurricane season has proven to be a tough toe for the Navy Exchange System. Hurricanes and tropical storms forced the temporary closure and evacuation of several Navy Exchanges and Navy Lodges located in the Gulf Coast states, resulting in millions of dollars in damage and lost sales.
In August, Navy Exchange Orlando, Fla., incurred significant damage from Hurricane Charley, forcing the store to close temporarily for repairs. Strong winds from the hurricane tore air ventilators from the roof, leaving large holes and causing significant water damage to the merchandise and the interior of the store.
