The foundation of this book is Valente's 1997 Harvard Ph.D. dissertation, and thus slips like "Richard D'mory" for Roger d'Amory (p. 139, but noted correctly in the index) can be forgiven. What is of importance is the topic of research. Valente set out to investigate the two centuries from Magna Carta (1215) to the Southampton Plot (1415). Her quest was to explore a particular aspect of violence in English political life, and to understand those episodes when the nobles of England engaged in war against their king. ...
