Martyn Powell's monograph is old-fashioned and unfashionable in a number of related ways. First, it is unapologetically political history. Second, its core is a narrative of struggles for power by individuals and groups between the 1750s and 1780s, which evinces little interest in those individuals and groups beyond their role in the great board game of politics.
