WHEN you want to look for British Airways on the internet, you automatically assume that its website is www.ba.com Interestingly, when the airline decided it needed a major online presence, it discovered that its preferred domain name had long ago been snapped up by American telephone company Bell Atlantic.

Crisis time for BA's internet future as executives realised that in the airlinebooking game, long domain names (such as www.britishairways.com) can be the kiss of marketing death.
