Jan. 24--TOKYO -- Heavy competition among retailers over anti-hay fever products has hit earlier than usual this year due to expectations that people who are allergic to pollen will suffer their worst reactions this spring.

In the coming season, cedar and cypress trees are likely to emit 17 times more pollen in Tokyo and 30 times more pollen in Osaka than amounts emitted over the same period last year, an increase mainly due to the heat wave in summer.

The latest products are an outstanding advancement on relieving symptoms at home, manufacturers say. Pollen easily penetrates indoors, exacerbating the discomfort people suffer from hay fever.
