Jan. 25--TOKYO -- Four of Japan's top five automakers increased their domestic sales in 2004 from a year earlier while scandal-hit Mitsubishi Motors Corp. struggled with a hefty 30.5 percent drop in annual sales, according to data released by the automakers Tuesday.
Toyota Motor Corp., which sold the largest number of vehicles last year in Japan among the five, said its domestic sales grew 2.5 percent to 1,758,843 units, for the second year of increases.
Mazda Motor Corp. increased its domestic sales by 1.7 percent to 282,507 units, led by robust sales of the Axela passenger car, called the Mazda3 overseas, and the Carol minivehicle.
