SO ALIKE; yet so different. So much men of their generation; yet so distinct in the lessons they have learnt from it. So runs the refrain about Dan Quayle, the vice-president, and Al Gore, the Democrats' candidate for the office. They were born 13 months apart (Mr Quayle is 45; Mr Gore 44). Both are the scions of leading families in their states. Both once worked for newspapers. Both won election to the House of Representatives in 1976; both later moved to the Senate. Both have wives who are public figures in their own right.
As for the differences, all you had to do was watch them at the vice-presidential debate in Atlanta on October 13th. The blond Mr Quayle was so ...
