I am writing in response to your editorial of Jan. 18, entitled "Sheriff needs to rethink jail." You state the "suicide ... of Meng-Ju Wu ought to provoke radical rethinking of all policies." You said, "Something is terribly wrong with how the jail is operating." You are right.
For too long, we have tried to house a growing jail population in an outdated, overcrowded, understaffed facility that lacks the simple technology found in today's modern jails. Simple things such as being able to see into individual cells easily and an adequate number of special needs cells for inmates - with mental health issues, medical problems, suicidal ideas, or other ...
