EMILIO Botin, chairman of Spain's Banco Santander Central Hispano, went on trial in Madrid today on charges of misappropriation of funds and irresponsible management. The charges relate to payoffs worth e150 million ([pounds sterling]104 million) made after Santander's merger with Banco Central Hispano Americano in 1999. Botin denies the charges. Santander bought Abbey National last year.
