She was born Marie-Madeleine Bernadette O'Carrol in Herbert Street, West Bromwich, in 1906. The world was to know her as Madeleine Carroll.
A French teacher and model, Carroll began acting in British films in the late 1920s and came to the attention of audiences as the heroine in the Alfred Hitchcock films The 39 Steps in 1935, and Secret Agent in 1936.
