The new wave of electronic data interchange will not be spelled "EDI", but something closer to "groupware."
In the past 10 years, electronic data interchange (EDI) has evolved so that simple electronic exchanges of batched data -- mailbox to mailbox, as it were --do not meet the operational requirements of partners. Today, developers must integrate EDI links to existing applications or to newly retrofitted ones.
"The low-hanging fruit has been picked," and the difficult chores lie ahead, said Ann Boland, a senior management consultant responsible for EDI cost justification at IBM, Tampa, Fla., describing today's EDI market.
