It was my fault, 110 doubt about it. And like most, if not all so-called firearms accidents, it was not an accident at all; it was caused by negligence on my part. I had mounted a scope and was now concentrating on sighting in. Everything was correct--almost. I had a sturdy shooting bench, the proper sighting-in target was set at the preferred starting distance of 25 yards, and I had a solid sandbag rest. In fact, I had enough sandbags they were stacked just-so, allowing the firearm to be rested on the bags with the scope crosshairs dead-center on the target.
Everything was set. I loaded a full-house .45-70 round in the chamber, looked through the scope, cocked ...
