Sixteen-year-old Sarah Costenero of Carol Stream, III., has had searing headaches twice a week for most of her life. The throbbing pain in her forehead was sometimes so intense that Sarah felt paralyzed. "I'd tell myself to go upstairs and [lie] down in my bedroom, but I was in so much pain, I couldn't do it," she told Current Health.

Headaches left Sarah dazed and unable to concentrate, and more than once her mother simply had to pick her up from school and take her home. When she was in ninth grade, Sarah had to be hospitalized for three days because of a particularly stubborn headache.
