Yucca and quillaja have traditionally been regarded primarily as sources of saponins, which have diverse biological effects. Recent research indicates that the membrane effects of saponins result in antiprotozoal and anti-nematode activity and modifications in rumen microbe populations.
Yucca and quillaja products are produced from Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria. Y. schidigera is an herbaceous plant of the lily family native to the Mexican state of Baja California. Q. saponaria is a hardwood tree native to Chile.
