Declared a dead medium in the '90s dot.com heyday, newspapers have fretted about online sites stealing their lucrative help-wanted ad revenue stream. But now, aided by employment Web site CareerBuilder.com, they're taking on the Monster.
CareerBuilder's troika of newspaper parents-Chicago's Tribune Co., Virginia-based Gannett Co. and Knight Ridder of San Jose, Calif.-offers access to 130 newspapers and 400 job sites, giving it an edge over rival Monster.com in the much-coveted local job market, a sector traditionally owned by newspapers.
