Police ready for attacks by insurgents
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AFP) Iraq closed its borders and sent tens of thousands of security forces on to the streets Saturday in a bid to stifle insurgent attacks in the final hours before the countrys historic election.
Cities were like ghost towns as most of the population waited nervously at home to see if it would be safe enough to take part in Sundays vote the first since the ousting of dictator Saddam Hussein by US-led forces in April, 2003.
