Through a finely honed selection of works, most dated 2004, the exhibition "Nothing Should Exist" explored the world according to Matt Mullican. It was the artist's means of reckoning with a universe demonstrably overburdened by material things. Here Mullican extended his familiar vocabulary of signs resembling international symbols to include photographs, objects such as stones and car and house keys cast in pewter relief, computer-generated landscapes he refers to as "Default Atmospheres" and DVD documents of actions performed under hypnosis. Each manifestation represents an aspect of Mullican's cosmology.
