Walter E. Steele of South Dartmouth, a retired associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court who prosecuted Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy in the famous Chappaquiddick case, died Thursday at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. He was 78.
Born and raised in Roxbury, Judge Steele was educated in Boston Public Schools. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Suffolk University.
Judge Steele served in the Navy during World War II.
After graduation, he served as an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County under District Attorney Garrett Byrne.
