The dinner with friends in our rented house on Elbow Cay, a narrow Bahamian out island, started with yellowtail snapper caught under our dock and ended as many meals there do - with key lime pie from Vernon's Grocery.
Like many visitors, we went to the island's village of Hope Town for its picture-perfect harbor, candy-striped lighthouse and narrow, flowered lanes lined with gingerbread New England cottages. Like many, we stayed for the pie.
Not any pie, but the key lime pie Vernon Malone has been selling from his cramped grocery store since 1962.
